There was a time when I felt as though I had really arrived. Great job, nice house, great friends, and tons of hobbies. Everything should have been perfect. So why did I constantly suffer from migraines, debilitating allergies, and dark thoughts about my place in the world. Day after day in gridlock traffic commuting had bound up my neck muscles to the point of paralysis. Something had to give. I left the great job, sold the house, said difficult goodbyes to friends and family who begged me not to leave, and escaped southern California for the wilds of Colorado. And I have never looked back.
Of course, life held challenges for me, from abusive relationships to the burning down of a cherished centennial barn. But, wherever I went, whatever happened, I made sure that I had animal companions. They made me laugh, kept me sane and grounded. When the time came to craft my Ph.D. dissertation, it was no surprise to anyone that I explored the benefits to human well-being, to a sense of eudamonia (a life well lived), that cherished relationships with animals can nourish, and facilitate. The gist of my research is contained in Zoodulcis (my word for the sweetness of animals).
Zoodulcis is a feeling and cognition about soft fascination with certain types of animals and how this fascination contributes to human well-being. Beneficial human-animal interactions can contribute to our mental, physical, and emotional health in countless ways. From attention restoration and stress reduction, to recovery from disease and illness, animals can improve our lives. Respectful interactions with pets, and even wildlife and livestock, can bring facilitate healing from disease, lower blood pressure, and reduce the symptoms of PTSD, among many other benefits.
